Will CBD Oil Make Me Sleepy

What's in the article?

CBD and CBD oils are becoming increasingly popular. Companies are jumping on the cbd trend and are using cbd in all sorts of products. You cannot go into a grocery store without seeing a person buying a cbd product. There are cbd health shots, gummies, chocolate, body wash, moisturizer etc. You can find almost any product that you want infused with cbd. Why are so many people buying into this trend and are there any actual benefits of using cbd? I have done a bit of research (no rights reserved as I am no doctor) but I have found that taking cbd will provide you with numerous health benefits. Many people are taking cbd to reduce anxiety and to improve the overall quality of both their and their pets lives. Day made!

What is CBD?

For many years, cannabis has been used for medicinal and recreational purposes. Compounds called cannabinoids in the plant are responsible for the effects on the brain. The two main cannabinoids are tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) cannabinoid and cannabidiol (CBD). Both the THC and CBD cannabinoid can be extracted from a cannabis plant (marijuana or hemp). The THC cannabinoid comes from the leaves and flowers of the marijuana plant and has psychoactive properties.

Unlike cannabis, hemp has a lower amount of THC and higher concentrations of CBD. Hemp CBD does provide medicinal benefits. CBD oil can be extracted from the flowers and leaves of cannabis plants and is used in various products such as oils, tablets, edibles and creams etc. CBD oil is a popular CBD product and is made by extracting CBD from cannabis plants and then diluting it with an oil like coconut or hemp seed oil.

There are two primary cannabinoid receptors in the body namely CB1 receptors and CB2 receptors. The CB1 is found in the brain and nervous system. CB2 is found in the immune system and has anti-inflammatory effects. Of the cannabinoid receptors, THC binds with the CB1 receptors and produces the feelings associated with being high. Unlink the THC cannabinoid, CBD binds very weakly to CB1 receptors and therefore will not provide the same psychoactive effects or feelings associated with being high.

Benefits of CBD

The health benefits of CBD and marijuana have been a major topic of medical research over many years. Cannabidiol already naturally occurs in your body and is one of the vital chemical compounds used by your endocannabinoid system (ECS) to encourage and maintain a sense of balance in your body. Researchers have found that CBD or cannabinoids bind to the existing endocannabinoid system and can help to maintain good health in humans and animals.

Years of medical research has found evidence that the endocannabinoid system can help treat medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation, pain, seizures and depression, PTSD, skin allergies and even withdrawal from addictions. CBD may also help to treat anxiety, migraines and menopause.

CBD Products

There are different ways to take CBD. You can consume CBD through edibles such as sprays, oils or lozenges. However, edibles might contain sugar and preservatives. If you are a person who is looking for quicker results, then try sublingual products which are absorbed under the tongue.

Correct Dose of CBD

You should consult with your doctor to find the correct CBD dose, however research suggests that for CBD oil, you can follow the below as a rough guideline:

  • 2.5 milligrams per kilogram of body weight twice daily, i.e. a total dosage of 5 mg/kg each day
  • After 1 week, people may increase the dosage to 5 mg/kg twice daily, which is a total of 10 mg/kg per day.

Side Effects of CBD

Despite the many benefits of CBD, there are possible different risks that you should keep in mind before you take CBD. CBD may lead to drowsiness or you feeling less alert if you consume too much of it. CBD has the potential to change your mood, making you feel irritated or agitated. CBD also has the potential to decrease your appetite or give you diarrhea.

Does CBD oil make you sleepy?

I often get asked “does CBD make you sleep better?” Many people say that CBD gummies cause drowsiness and using CBD oil makes you sleepy. Unlike other sleep medications which do work and help you fall asleep instantly, CBD interacts with receptors in the endocannabinoid system and assists in reducing physical pain, high anxiety or stress which in advertently helps you to go to sleep and maintain a healthy mind.

There are many causes of insomnia. Causes of insomnia include mental health disorders like anxiety, stress or PTSD, physical pain, certain medications and stimulants such as coffee and other environmental factors such as loud and disruptive sleep conditions etc. Other conditions like an overactive mind and pain in your body or side could prevent you from feeling sleepy. So how does CBD make you sleep better? CBD interacts with the receptors in the brain and help to treat the underlying cause of insomnia, such as helping with anxiety, calming the central nervous system and helping the body to relax which will all help you to fall asleep quicker and have a better sleep. CBD may also help treat day time tiredness, which could make you feel more alert during the work day and provide you with more focus.

However, it does take time for CBD oil to treat insomnia. It generally takes about a month of CBD use to work and to make you feel like you are getting better sleep. The great thing about CBD use as a sleep aid is that CBD is a natural and organic way to help you to feel relaxed and make you sleepy. Other prescription sleeping pills have some seriously bad side effects such as diarrhea, dizziness, constipation and they can make you feel very tired during the day which makes you struggle to focus on day to day tasks. CBD is therefore a better sleep aid than toxic sleeping pills.

A medical study conducted in the U.S. actually found evidence of CBD use making you more tired and therefore the time it took to fall asleep was reduced. The study also showed that CBD use helps in improving the quality of sleep. CBD users also woke up feeling less tired and actually felt more alert during the day time.

CBD is one natural way to promote sleep but there are other natural w ays to get the same effect. People generally recommend exercise as one method that works to help you fall asleep more easily and to improve the quality of your sleep. Yoga is one form of exercise, in particular, that helps to make you tired at night and therefore works to improve sleep. Massages, of at least one hour, are believed to release serotonin and send messages to the nervous system, which calm people down and aid relaxation and sleep. One can also try meditation, which might help improve sleep as well, depending on the cause of insomnia. Old wives tales also suggest a cup of milky tea at night time to help soothe and calm you before bedtime.

People who are specifically struggling with sleep apnea need to try THC. THC has a binding effect on both cb1 and cb2 receptors and studies show that THC may improve breathing during sleep. THC therefore works as a potential sleep apnea treatment. This may help reduce tiredness for sleep apnea sufferers. Of the cannabinoids, Cannabinol (CBN) is less known but has strong sedative effects, particularly when combined with THC.

Effects of a lack of sleep on the body

Insufficient sleep may lead to some serious health issues. Insomnia makes you feel tired, irritable and moody and lets be honest you don’t look so great. However, the effects can be way more dangerous that that. In the long term, studies suggest that a lack of sleep can lead to heart attacks, obesity, diabetes, depression, anxiety and a weakened immune system.

In conclusion, CBD helps you to sleep better. However, if you are taking the correct doses then you should not feel tired in the day. If you are experiencing this effect then you would need to chat to your doctor to find the correct doses for you personally in the day and night time.

Okay, by writing this post, I officially feel more sleepy. I am also trying to get rid of that “just woken up “look so I am going to go and get myself some CBD. Make sure to chat to your doctor, get a CBD product ready, get the right levels and enjoy a full week of sleep ahead.
